With Assam experiencing torrential rainfall over the last few days, a lot of NGOs, government organisations and corporate communities are coming forward to help those affected. Amazon too is committed to extend its support to the relief efforts in the areas affected.

According to reports by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 4,200,000 people have been affected and 15 people have died due to floods in 17 districts across Assam. The water level of rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Dikhow, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Puthimari and Beki have risen well above the danger mark. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal too have been affected due to heavy rains and landslides. In Meghalaya and Manipur warning has been issued for probable landslides and flash flood like situations.

In Assam and Bihar, it has been observed by Amazon that the worst affected families are from poor and marginalised communities living in thatched or mud houses, hence making the impact of the floods further severe. Owing to poor transportation, many people are facing difficulties in accessing government relief assistance/ services and support systems. This further increases the risk of ‘Exclusion’ of those hoiuseholds from the government support even while the connectivity of the areas is restored.

Our NGO partner has decided to reach out to a total of 40000 households, or approximately 200,000 people in both the states with immediate support in the following areas:

  • Enhanced access to food and shelter materials (Shelter and Food kits)
  • Access to materials to ensure safe and hygienic WASH practices (WASH/ Hygiene kits)
  • Public Health Promotion activities at affected community level.
