When Amazon.in launched in India in 2013, e-commerce was still nascent. Digital payments were limited, logistics infrastructure was fragmented, and most small businesses had no online presence. Over the past decade, as India's digital economy has grown exponentially, Amazon's growth has been deeply intertwined with India's digital transformation—not just as a participant, but as an enabler of it.

By investing in infrastructure, creating jobs, and digitising millions of small businesses, Amazon has helped unlock economic opportunities across the country, from metros to tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Sellers who once served only local customers are now reaching buyers across India and around the world. Artisans and manufacturers in smaller towns are now accessing markets they didn’t have access to.

Amazon’s impact extends beyond commerce and it has been a partner and contributor in India’s growth story.

The 2020 pledges: A commitment to India's growth

Back in 2020, Amazon announced three ambitious pledges as part of its commitment to India:: to digitise 10 million small and medium businesses (SMBs), enable $10 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports from India, and create 2 million direct and indirect jobs by 2025.

Five years later, Amazon has not only met these goals, but exceeded them. Amazon has enabled over 12 million small businesses to be a part of India’s digital economy, the company has enabled $20 billion in cumulative ecommerce exports and supported 2.8 million direct, indirect and induced jobs.

Since 2010, Amazon has invested nearly $40 billion in India—including compensation to employees and the development of physical and digital infrastructure such as fulfilment centres, transportation networks, data centres, and technology development. As per a recent report by Keystone, Amazon is India’s largest foreign investor, the largest enabler of e-commerce exports, and one of the country’s biggest job creators.

What's next

Recently, at the sixth edition of Amazon’s annual Smbhav summit, the company announced an additional $35 billion in planned investment across all our businesses in India through 2030. Amazon aims to further accelerate digital transformation, strengthen infrastructure, and support innovation across the country. These investments are strategically aligned with India's national priorities and will focus on expanding AI capabilities, enhancing logistics infrastructure, supporting small business growth and creating jobs.

Supporting 3.8 million job opportunities by 2030: Amazon supported approximately 2.8 million direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs across India in 2024, spanning technology, operations, logistics, retail, and creative services. By 2030, the company plans to generate an additional one million direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs. These will stem from Amazon's business expansion as well as its growing fulfillment and delivery network, which simultaneously supports parallel industries including packaging, manufacturing, and transportation services.

Taking Made-in-India global: Amazon has set a goal of enabling $80 billion in cumulative ecommerce exports from India by 2030. Taking a significant step toward this goal, Amazon recently launched "Accelerate Exports," a manufacturing-focused initiative designed to connect digital entrepreneurs with trusted manufacturers while enabling manufacturers to become successful global sellers. As part of the program, Amazon will host on-ground onboarding drives in over 10 manufacturing clusters across India, including Tirupur, Kanpur, and Surat.

Bringing the benefits of AI to students, entrepreneurs, and customers across India: Amazon's comprehensive AI commitment will transform India's digital landscape to support the government's vision of "AI for All." By 2030, Amazon plans to:

• Bring benefits of AI to 15 million small businesses, with sellers on Amazon.in already using AI-powered tools like Seller Assistant, Next Gen Selling, and others.

• Enhance shopping experiences for hundreds of millions of shoppers through innovations like Lens AI for visual discovery, conversational shopping with Rufus, and multilingual experiences that overcome literacy barriers.

• Empower 4 million government school students with AI education and career exploration opportunities through AI curriculum, technology career tours, hands-on AI sandbox experiences, and teacher training programs. This initiative supports India's National Education Policy 2020 by democratizing AI education through Amazon's technology expertise and nonprofit partnerships.
